You Can't Make This Up

Chapter 01 — The Mirror

“I got you a massage,” he said. “Just to say thanks. And, you know... for all the birthdays I've missed.”

I was walking into this tranquil oasis, already feeling my shoulders beginning to unknot, when the spa door opened. Out walked Victor. His hair disheveled in that unmistakable post-massage way. That post-massage glow. More at peace than I'd seen him in months.

“That massage was not nearly long enough. I'm sorry, but I'm gonna take this next hour too.”

He had literally taken my massage. The massage he had given me. The gift that was supposed to represent appreciation, generosity, and maybe even a turning point in our working relationship.

Chapter 02 — The Serpent

Peter Attia

Peter Attia, MD

Dr. Peter Attia built a platform on helping people live longer, healthier lives. Stanford degree. Johns Hopkins trained. Bestselling book. Podcast reaching millions. Then the Epstein files dropped. Emails surfaced. And within days, critics discovered he hadn't completed his residency. Wasn't board certified.

One crack. And the whole foundation gets re-examined.

That's what shame does. It doesn't just punish the sin. It rewrites the story. It takes your entire life and filters it through your lowest moment until that's all anyone can see.

Chapter 05 — The Flame

While I was working on my laptop four feet away from Judas, he suddenly started breathing extremely erratically. His eyes went dark, fixed. His hands curled at his sides. I started compressions. For nine minutes, I pushed on that man's chest. Nine minutes of pumping, counting, hoping, praying.

Judas died in our presence that day.

He was a father who loved his daughter, a human being who made a terrible choice and paid the ultimate price for it. I pushed on that man's chest for nine minutes trying to keep him alive. And Victor's response was to retell the story as a war trophy. He saw an enemy to be defeated rather than a person to be confronted with truth and grace. And in missing Judas's humanity, he lost some of his own.

Chapter 05 — The Art of Conflict

How you fight matters more than whether you win. Every time.

The conflicts that transform you are never the ones you dominated. They're the ones where you managed to stay human while everything in you wanted to go to war. Where you held your ground without losing your soul. Where you found a way to love the person across the table even when you couldn't agree with them.
